Gambling Licences Explained: UKGC, MGA, Curacao and Others

Every legitimate online casino operates under at least one licence, and the regulator behind it decides how much protection you actually get.

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) regulates operators serving Great Britain. Its requirements include segregation of player funds, mandatory participation in the GAMSTOP self-exclusion scheme, affordability and safer gambling checks, bans on credit card deposits, and strict rules on how bonuses may be advertised. Complaints escalate to an approved ADR provider.

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) licenses many operators serving the wider European market. It requires player fund protection, technical audits of games, and has its own complaints process through the Player Support Unit.

Curacao restructured its regime under the Curacao Gaming Authority, replacing the old master-and-sublicence model with direct licensing. Standards have tightened compared with the historic sublicence system, but player-protection requirements remain lighter than under the UKGC or MGA.

Other significant regulators include the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, Germany's GGL, Ontario's iGaming Ontario and AGCO, and Sweden's Spelinspektionen.

How to verify a licence: take the licensee name and licence number from the casino footer, then search the regulator's own public register directly — never through a link on the casino site. If the register shows a different trading name, a lapsed status, or no record at all, treat that as a stop sign.
