Table Game Rule Variations That Change the Odds

The small print at the table is worth more than any strategy chart.

Blackjack, roulette and baccarat all come in variants where a single rule shifts the maths meaningfully.

In blackjack: a 6:5 payout for a natural instead of 3:2 costs roughly 1.4 percentage points, dealer hitting on soft 17 costs about 0.2, and restrictions on doubling or splitting add more. A game with good rules and one with poor rules can differ by more than the entire edge of a well-run table.

In roulette: single zero versus double zero is the headline, and rules such as la partage or en prison on even-money bets halve the edge again where offered.

In baccarat: commission-free variants usually reduce the banker payout on a specific winning total, which more than compensates the house.
