Social Casino Games: No Cash Out, Real Spending
Free-to-play casino apps sell chips that cannot be redeemed, and sit outside most gambling regulation.
Social casino apps present slot and table games with virtual currency. Chips can be purchased but not redeemed for money, which places them outside most gambling definitions and therefore outside gambling regulation.
That has consequences. There are no mandatory deposit limits, no self-exclusion scheme, no independent RTP certification requirement, and no regulator to complain to. Spending can still be substantial.
Payout behaviour is also not constrained by gambling rules, so the virtual return rates in these games need not resemble those of certified real-money titles.
They are frequently used as a marketing funnel toward real-money products, and research has examined whether they normalise gambling for younger users. Treat them as paid entertainment with in-app purchases rather than as risk-free practice.
