Gambling Advertising Rules, Explained Simply

Content restrictions, audience targeting and mandatory messaging that shape every legal gambling advert.

Gambling advertising in regulated markets is bound by both statutory rules and advertising codes, and the constraints are stricter than most other consumer categories.

Adverts must not be likely to appeal strongly to under-18s, which rules out cartoon styling, youth-culture references and, in Great Britain, the use of sportspeople and celebrities with strong appeal to young audiences. They must not present gambling as a solution to financial problems, a route to social success, or something that can be controlled through skill where it cannot.

Media placement is also controlled: audience-composition rules restrict where adverts may run, and some jurisdictions impose watershed timing or outright bans on certain channels.

Mandatory messaging such as age restrictions, terms availability and safer gambling signposting is part of the compliance package rather than an optional courtesy.
