Anti-Money-Laundering Checks in Online Casinos
Why casinos ask about source of funds, and what a proportionate request looks like.
Gambling operators are regulated entities for anti-money-laundering purposes. They must identify customers, monitor transactions and report suspicious activity.
In practice this produces three kinds of request. Identity verification confirms who you are with a document and a proof of address. Source of funds asks how the money you are depositing was obtained, usually via payslips, bank statements or a tax document. Enhanced due diligence applies to higher-risk profiles and asks for more.
A proportionate request is specific, explains what is needed and why, and is triggered by a threshold or a pattern. A disproportionate one arrives only after a large win, demands unrelated documents, and stalls without explanation.
You cannot opt out of these checks at a licensed operator, but you can complete them early. Verifying at signup rather than at withdrawal removes the most common cause of payout delays.
